Discord Bots

Adding Bots to Discord

Originally designed for gaming communities, Discord has gained popularity as a communication and collaboration platform bringing communities together online. With this emergence, there has been an increasing usage of Discord bots.

A Discord bot is a type of software typically created by a third-party developer to provide unique services and features. It is designed to run within the platform. With the appropriate permissions, users can add a bot to a Discord server. The bot then uses the Discord API to interact with the platform.

Functionality & Benefits

By adding bots to their Discord server, an online community can create unique member experiences while simplifying processes. Namely, bots offer the opportunity to incorporate engaging features and streamlined tools. A bot can be used to create custom commands that allow users to easily access information or perform certain tasks. Bots can also automate certain activities, such as moderating discussions, welcoming new community members, and managing roles and permissions.

Discord bots are being used to:

  • Provide tools and utilities for server administrators
  • Manage and organize channels and discussions
  • Moderate discussions
  • Optimize music playback
  • Provide access to information and resources
  • Offer fun and engaging features (e.g., games, surveys, giveaways)

Additionally, some bots can integrate with external services, such as streaming platforms, to create a more cohesive experience for community members.

Web3 and Tokengating Bots

An NFT-gated Discord bot can help create and manage a unique set of roles, permissions and rewards down to the individual user—regardless of the community or server size. NFT-gated Discord bots typically work by integrating with a blockchain platform that supports NFT creation and management. Web3 and tokengating bots can also be used to administer decentralized applications (dApps) within a Discord server, giving users access to blockchain-based services and tools.

Adding Bots to Your Server

Interested in adding a Discord bot to your server? You will need to have the ”Administrator” advanced permission first. Then, for most bots the steps are similar:

  1. Visit the website of the Discord bot you want to add to your server.
  2. Find the “Add to Discord” or “Invite” button on the bot’s website.
  3. Click the button to open the Discord OAuth2 permission screen.
  4. Select the server you want to add the bot to from the drop-down menu.
  5. Click the “Authorize” button to add the bot to your server.

Once added, you can begin utilizing the bot’s various features. You may need to configure the bot’s settings and permissions in your Discord server to make sure it has the necessary access to perform its tasks. Then, you can customize and optimize the bot depending on its capabilities.
